What are the most beautiful lakes for diving ?

Lake Baikal, Russia

Located in the south of Siberia, the Lake Baikal has a total surface of 31 722 km² and it is 455m high. It’s the oldest and also the deepest lake of the world 1642m. It’s also the largest fresh water pool 20% of the world total volume approximatively.
You can sail there from June to September, and most of the time it is covered with ice that can reach 1 or 2m thick.

Extremly enriched thanks to the 600 species of plants and 1 550 of animals that reside there, the lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among these creatures there is the nerpa, a fresh water seal, but also the Comephorus baikalensis which explodes and leaves a fat spot when surfacing too fast!
You can dive there all year. Lovers of frosty water will be able to discover a unique underwater relief and play under icy layers and wonderful set of lights. However, only advanced divers wearing airtight wetsuit.

Thousand Islands Lake or Qiandao Lake, China

Located in Zhejiang Province, China, Thousand Islands Lake’s name comes from the 1078 dispersed islets there. This artificial 550 km² large lake appeared after the creation of a hydraulic dam in Xinan that engulfed two ancient cities, Shi Cheng and He Cheng. Those cities were built under the Han and Tang dynasties in 621 AD. They nom remain intact, for divers great pleasure!

Þingvallavatn Lake, Iceland

In the wonderful National Park of Þingvellir registered as UNESCO world heritage records, Þingvallavatn Lake appeared about 12 000 years before. It is the biggest Icelandic natural lake, 84km² large and 114m deep. It is mostly known for its famous breach, Silfra, which makes Þingvallavatn Lake a unique spot where people can dive between two continents: Europe and America. With its 4°C crystalline water, Silfra is know to be the best dive site in Iceland and to be a dream for frosty water divers.

Animal cemetery cenote, Mexico

When limestone rocks fall, cenotes geological formation of caves and wells and underground fresh water lakes can appear. The particularity of them is that they are venerated by Mayas. The animal cemetery cenote, as well called Sistema Sac Actun. Its name comes from skeletons from animal that disappeared long time ago, like the prehistoric camel. Located in the Maya Riviera, Mexico, this is the largest underwater cave of the world. Both divers with snorkelings and divers with cylinders can dive there because of the non-deep water only 3 m. Divers will face there an uncommon and beautiful show of lights, mineral and vegetal elements act together!

Capo D’Acqua Lake, Italia

In the centre of Italia, you can find the artificial lake Capo d’Acqua which was created as an irrigation reservoir, engulfing the Middle Ages dated ruins of two windmills at the same time. Only divers will be able to see them as they are immersed at 8 m deep, in a water going from 15 to 26°C. You should be aware that the lake is located on a private property, so you absolutely need to get the authorization first.
