Scientists discover deep blue sea fish at record-breaking depths
by spotmydive
Japanese researchers have just discovered one of the deepest sea creatures ever discovered. It is in the abyss of the Mariana Trench, in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, near the island of Guam, at -8178 meters deep, that this fish could be observed. And surprise, unlike the nasty critters living in extreme depths, it is a cute little blue fish with a harmless appearance, the opposite of the frightening Humpback anglerfish!
A fish living at -8178 meters
In May 2017, Japanese scientists visited the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the earth’s crust. They immersed a bag filled with mackerel and a 4k camera, hoping to bait creatures still unknown. And it worked ! At -8178 meters deep, pretty little bluish fish showed up and could be filmed by the camera. It now seems difficult to beat this record because, below 8200 meters, the fish would no longer be able to make enough osmolyte, the molecule that allows them to fight very high pressures caused by the depths. Researchers do not give up, and will continue their research. Will this record be beaten? The bets are open !
