Gran Canaria, is an island of volcanic origin belonging to the Canary Islands archipelago, located in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the third largest island in the Canary Islands, it is also the second most populous island after Tenerife. Gran Canaria is often compared to a continent in miniature because of the great diversity of its landscapes, alternating plains, mountains, large beaches but also its many climates. But beyond this heavenly landscape, the island is also a fantastic destination for a diving trip in the Canary Islands. Diving trip to Gran Canaria, where to dive?
El Cabron Marine Reserve
The world-famous El Cabron Marine Reserve is located in Aringa, in the sub-tropical waters of Gran Canaria. Divers will marvel at the diversity and density of marine life including butterfly fish, angels of the sea, red clown fish and of course, nudibranchs.
Arigana Marine Reserve
South of Gran Canaria, the Arigana Marine Reserve, more commonly known as El Cabron, is worldwide famous. It is presented as one of the most beautiful places to dive in Gran Canaria but also in the Canaries. This reserve has been declared particularly interesting by the European Union because of its volcanic composition. There are many caves, caves, marine holes, arches, all more surprising than the others. You can even dive several times because this reserve offers more than 8 dive sites with 4 different entry points. In the surroundings, the dive site “Pecios de Mogan” allows to discover the wrecks of two ships sunk in 2002. Another wreck of a Russian ferry, “El Pajar”, sunk in 2003, lies 22 meters deep. Finally, the dive sites of Punta del Sal, El Perchel and Pasito Blanco are worth a visit.
North of the island
To the north, you will discover the dive spots of the Burbuja Grotto Bubble Cave at the Isleta or the remains of the Angela Pando and Korsakov boats near the Port de la Luz in Las Palmas. For snorkelers, the beach of Las Canteras is one of the best places thanks to its barrier reef barra easily accessible from the edge.
When should I go?
You can dive throughout the year in Gran Canaria. However, if you want to enjoy the highest temperatures, you should go during the summer season.
What can you see while scuba diving in Gran Canaria
In addition to the exceptional seabed, the diving allows to admire a rich fauna living near the shore of Gran Canaria. One of the specificities of the Canaries is to be a unique place that combines species of oceanic origins but also tropical. There are also sars, dentis, dorados, groupers, saupes, monkfish, mullet, old, tropical fish such as trunk fish, parrot fish, barracudas, stingrays, tuna and many schools of small fish . Perhaps you will have the chance to see the famous “roncadores”, these schools of very compact and very large fish that take the form of a ball? An emblematic species of the Canary Islands, the “angelotes”, more commonly known as angel sharks, are regularly seen in scuba diving. There are other protected species around Gran Canaria, such as the giant manta ray, loggerhead turtles and butterfly rays.
